During the American Revolutionary War, a 75-ton chain was floated on logs across the Hudson River to prevent British ships from raiding upstate New York. Americans built fortifications at West Point (now home to the famous military school) to protect the chain. The British paid infamous turncoat Benedict Arnold 20,000 pounds for the plans to West Point so they could disable the chain.
