In 1966, while on tour in the Philippines, the Beatles turned down a brunch invitation from Imelda Marcos, wife of the authoritarian president. Marcos felt slighted, and the band’s police protection was withdrawn. Throngs of Marcos supporters mobbed them on their way to the airport. Before they left the country, Paul McCartney apologized on local radio to smooth things over.
