As of 2010, an estimated 3 million people in China’s Shanxi province lived in fabricated caves called yaodong. The caves are dug into dirt that is soft enough to sculpt but dense enough to insulate. They are cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and cheap to make. China’s president Xi Jinping spent part of his childhood living in one such cave in a neighboring province.
