After winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race in 1966, driver Jo Siffert opened a bottle of champagne that had been left out in the sun. The warmed bottle unexpectedly sprayed bubbly onto spectators. The following year’s winner purposefully recreated this, starting the tradition of champagne showers for sports champions.
