To become a taxi driver in London, applicants must pass a seven-stage process that includes a comprehensive test on the city’s 25,000 streets and innumerable points of interest. The “Knowledge of London” test was introduced in 1865 and continues today despite the widespread availability of GPS. Only about 30 percent of applicants complete the course.
