In 2007 Pope Benedict XVI issued an apostolic letter, Summorum pontificum (“Of the Supreme Pontiffs”), allowing the general use of the 1962 Roman Missal and distinguishing it as the extraordinary form of the Latin rite. The 1970 missal was named as the ordinary form. This letter granted some concessions to the celebration of traditional Latin masses, which had been replaced with the modern rite by the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65).
