In 2021 Pope Francis issued the apostolic letter Traditionis custodes (“Guardians of the Tradition”), which further restricted the celebration of the traditional Latin mass. He decreed that the 1962 Roman Missal (which contained the rite used in the Roman Catholic Church before the Second Vatican Council) cannot be used without a bishop’s authorization and is forbidden in parish churches. Bishops are allowed to determine a suitable location for celebrating the 1962 rite within their dioceses.
