A traditional Latin mass is celebrated in Latin. In the modern rite, the novus ordo (“new order”), the mass is celebrated in the vernacular language, or the language(s) of the local diocese. In addition, in the traditional rite the liturgy of the Eucharist is performed with the priest’s back to the congregation. In a modern mass the priest faces the laypeople during the elevation of the communion host and chalice.
