In 1897 New York City inaugurated a 7,500-foot pneumatic tube system connecting various postal service buildings. While the system would eventually move 95,000 letters daily, the initial day saw employees send a package of books, a dozen eggs, and a live cat through the tubes. The cat was stunned but unharmed by the trip.
