In 1822 the UK passed legislation standardizing the size of a commercial loaf of bread at 16 oz (or exact multiples thereof). This was lowered to 14 oz during World War II because of rationing, then changed to 400 grams when the country converted to the metric system. The restriction ended in 2008, following a directive from the European Commission.
