Italian cheese makers embed tiny microchips in their parmesan wheels to help fight counterfeiting. The microchips are unlikely to be eaten since they are inserted in the rind, but they are edible just in case. The Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium estimates that counterfeit cheese sales add up to $2 billion a year.
