In 1980 San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve DeBerg was stricken with laryngitis. In order for his on-field play calling to be heard over the crowd, a mic was placed in his helmet and a bulky speaker, three times louder than a car stereo, was strapped to his back, under his jersey (causing a visible hump). The 49ers won that game. Three years later DeBerg took a hit that damaged his throat, and he again wore the speaker.
