Initially, the primary targets of the Goa Inquisition were the New Christians, Portuguese Jews who had been forced to convert to Catholicism and had later fled Portugal for Goa but were suspected of illegally practicing Judaism in secret. As the Goa Inquisition continued, its leaders increasingly charged Hindus, Muslims, and local converts to Christianity with crimes for non-Catholic practices.
