India is home to hundreds of languages and dialects from four main language families: Indo-Iranian, Dravidian, Austroasiatic, and Tibeto-Burman, as well as a few language isolates. Hindi and English are the two major lingua francas, while 22 scheduled languages have official state recognition. Numerous tribal and regional languages are also spoken across the country.
