After Alassane Ouattara’s victory in the 2010 election, the political standoff that ensued with incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo, who refused to step down, led to a crisis with political, economic, and humanitarian dimensions. Once Ouattara officially took office in May 2011, he was faced with the tasks of reviving the economy as well as fostering reconciliation and justice for Ivoirians scarred by the election crisis.
