In 1970 the International Olympic Committee selected Denver, Colorado, as the host of the 1976 Winter Games. However, in 1972 voters in Colorado voted against using public funds to support the Games, and Denver withdrew. Although numerous cities have withdrawn bids at earlier stages in the process, Denver remains the only city to withdraw after having been named the host. The 1976 Winter Games ended up being held in Innsbruck, Austria.
