In 1993 at age 49, Arthur Ashe died of pneumonia, a complication of AIDS. The previous year he had revealed that he had contracted the virus that causes AIDS. Ashe likely became infected through a tainted blood transfusion that he received during one of his coronary bypass operations in 1979 and 1983.
