St. Bernard of Clairvaux (born in 1090 in Burgundy) was a Cistercian monk and mystic, founder and abbot of the abbey of Clairvaux (France), and one of the most influential churchmen of his time. He was canonized (formally declared a saint) in 1174 and is venerated in both the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches.
