Key events include the British treaty in 1762 and the administration of the princely state under British supervision, as a five-year-old raja, Chura Chand, was nominated in 1891. The administration was transferred to the raja in the early 1900s, and the region was divided into three subdivisions, each headed by an officer from the neighboring government of Assam, in 1917. Manipur merged with India in 1949, became a union territory in 1956, and gained statehood later than other neighboring states, in 1972. Ethnic conflicts and demands for autonomy have been ongoing issues.
