The main event of Raksha Bandhan is a small ceremony in which a sister ties a string bracelet or amulet, usually made of red or yellow thread, called a rakhi on the right wrist of her brother. The siblings also exchange sweets. In modern practice the tying of rakhis as a sign of mutual protection and respect has expanded beyond siblings to include cousins and other sibling-like community relations.
