After returning from the Vietnam War (1954–75), American writer Tim O’Brien studied intermittently at Harvard University and worked for The Washington Post in the early 1970s as an intern and reporter. In 1973 he published his first book, If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home, a collection of newspaper and magazine articles about his war experiences.
