The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has been banned throughout India on three occasions. The organization was first banned in 1948 for its alleged involvement in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. It was then outlawed in 1975 during the Emergency (1975–77) and in 1992 following the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. The three bans were lifted in 1949, 1977, and 1993, respectively.
