American serial killer Aileen Wuornos murdered at least seven people in 1989–90. Some speculate that she may have killed an eighth motorist in the same period. The murders took place while she was earning a living as a sex worker. The victims were middle-aged male motorists, and she left their bodies along the highways of Florida and southern Georgia. Wuornos initially claimed that she had acted in self-defense, but she later admitting to killing the men for money.
