The film Die Hard was derived from a sequel to a novel that was made into a movie in 1968 starring Frank Sinatra. As a result, the makers of Die Hard were legally bound to offer the role of John McClane (eventually played by Bruce Willis) to Sinatra, then over 70 years old.
