Much of the area of the Louisiana Purchase belonged to Spain from 1762 until 1800, when Napoleon coerced it away from the Spanish king. When Napoleon sold it to the U.S. in 1803, Spain was displeased. The country sent hundreds of troops from Santa Fe on four different missions to apprehend the Lewis and Clark expedition, narrowly missing them twice.
