Nichelle Nichols played Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek series, but after the first season she considered leaving to pursue acting on Broadway. At an NAACP fundraiser she was approached by Martin Luther King, Jr. He told her he was a Trekkie and her appearance on the show was important to the advancement of civil rights. He was shocked she was considering leaving and convinced her to stay.
