During the 1972 Apollo 17 Moon mission, a rear fender accidentally broke off the Lunar Rover Vehicle, popularly called the Moon buggy. The fender was crucial for keeping Moon debris from being kicked up by the tires, a serious hazard to the astronauts. Without it, the rover could not be driven. The astronauts fashioned a makeshift fender by duct-taping four lunar maps to the rover, allowing for its safe operation.
