Coyotes make a number of different vocalizations, some of which sound like human screams. These sounds—including yips, barks, and howls—are crucial for communication and are made for a variety of reasons. Coyote howls, which perhaps are the most scream-like noise the animal makes, are believed to indicate the occupancy of a territory. By vocalizing, they can assert their presence and warn other coyotes to stay away from their claimed area.
