The sperm whale, which preys on the colossal squid, is generally bigger than the colossal squid. A male sperm whale can grow to about 24 meters (79 feet) long and weigh up to 50 metric tons (50,000 kg or 110,000 pounds). The colossal squid, by comparison, can reach lengths of up to 14 meters (46 feet) and weigh more than 500 kg (1,100 pounds) when measuring both the body and the tentacles, although a colossal squid of this length has not yet been observed. Female sperm whales, however, are usually under 14 meters in length, and so some colossal squids, at their greatest possible length, may exceed some female sperm whales in length.
