The Carpathia is famous because it rescued the survivors of the Titanic in 1912. While not the closest ship to the Titanic, the Carpathia was the first to arrive at the scene, traveling at top speed despite the presence of icebergs. Although the Titanic had sunk more than an hour earlier, the Carpathia rescued 705 people in lifeboats.
