The Edmund Fitzgerald sank on November 10, 1975, during a storm on Lake Superior. All 29 aboard were killed. The freighter’s mysterious demise—there were no distress signals—inspired Gordon Lightfoot’s hit song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” (1976), which helped make it the most famous shipwreck in the Great Lakes.
