Since 1992 a portrait of Edmund Hillary has been featured on New Zealand’s $5 banknote. He became the first living person who was not a head of state to appear on the country’s currency. Hillary was recognized for his historic summit of Mount Everest. In 1953 he and Tenzing Norgay were the first to reach the top of the mountain.
