St. Celestine V, originally named Pietro da Morrone (or Pietro Angelerio), was a 13th-century Benedictine monk and hermit known for his strict piety and asceticism and his reputation as a miracle worker. He founded the Celestines, a group of hermits that was later incorporated into the Benedictine order. He was elected pope on July 5, 1294, but he resigned from the papacy on December 13, wanting to return to his life as a hermit.
