Before becoming pope, Boniface VIII was Benedetto Caetani, a Roman Catholic cardinal who had been born into an influential Roman family. He studied law in Bologna (Italy) and held important roles in the papal government as a cardinal deacon and later a cardinal priest. He was elected to the papacy in 1294 and reigned until his death in 1303.
