Early leaders of the Indian National Congress include Dadabhai Naoroji, Surendranath Banerjee, and Gopal Krishna Gokhale. As the Indian Independence Movement evolved, Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lajpat Rai, Chittaranjan Das, Sarojini Naidu, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Vallabhbhai Patel became prominent figures of the party. After independence the party was dominated by Nehru’s family, which included his daughter Indira Gandhi, her son Rajiv Gandhi, and Rajiv’s wife, Sonia Gandhi, who held the post of Congress Party president for more than 20 years.
