Canaanite peoples inhabited the earliest known settlement of Jaffa. It was assigned to the tribe of Dan following the Israelite conquest of Canaan, but it was soon afterward taken by the Philistines and later lost prominence to the coastal Phoenician city-states. Despite the changes in rule in its ancient history, Jaffa might have been continuously inhabited by Canaanites in the Bronze and Iron ages.
