The goddess Durga defeats Mahishasura (“Buffalo Demon”) as told in the Devi Mahatmya, a feat that is the basis for Durga Puja and Vijayadashami holidays. The deities Shiva and Parvati wed and birth the god Skanda so that he might defeat the asura Taraka. Many of the god Vishnu’s avatars defeat asuras, as well as demonic rakshasas. Notable asuras defeated by Vishnu include Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu, and other demons are defeated by Vishnu’s avatar Krishna.
