The hot-air balloon was first invented in France. The Montgolfier brothers, Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne, are credited with inventing the hot-air balloon in the 18th century after supposedly observing Joseph’s wife’s skirts billowing from the heat of a charcoal burner. The brothers’ first public demonstration of their invention occurred on June 4, 1783, in the small town of Annonay.
