Operational small modular reactors (SMRs) are located in Russia (starting in 2020), China (starting in 2021), and Japan (a test reactor was brought online in 2024). Although there are no SMRs operating in the United States at present, several companies and electrical utilities plan to build them using a variety of designs, pending approval from U.S. regulatory bodies.
