Paul Cullen’s reforms of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland in the mid-19th century are credited with shaping that country’s religious character into the 20th century. Among his reforms were inviting religious orders to set up schools and charities and aligning the administration of sacraments and celebration of mass with that of the Roman church. His efforts led to what has been described as a “devotional revolution” in Ireland.
