St. Ignatius of Antioch saw martyrdom as a way to unite with Christ by sharing in Jesus’ Passion and glory. Ignatius believed that only through union with Christ’s suffering could he achieve perfection and feared being deprived of this opportunity. Ignatius died a martyr in the Roman arena c. 110 (i.e., he was condemned to die by being torn apart by lions).
