Ehud Barak attempted to revive peace talks with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, but he was unable to balance the demands of the Israeli right with those of the Palestinians. In September 2000 the mounting frustration between the Israeli right and the Palestinians came to a head with the outbreak of the second intifada, sparked by the provocative visit of opposition leader Ariel Sharon to the Temple Mount.
