Benedict XVI was born Joseph Ratzinger in Germany in 1927. He was the youngest of three children. His parents were staunch Roman Catholics and were hostile to the Nazi regime. Ratzinger entered a seminary in 1939, was compelled to join the Hitler Youth in 1941, and was drafted into the German military in 1943.
