Kirk Franklin was legally adopted by his grandaunt, Gertrude Franklin, after being left in her care as a young child. She collected aluminum cans to pay for his piano lessons, and at age seven he was offered a recording contract (which his aunt turned down). When he was 11 years old he became choir leader at his family’s local Baptist church in Dallas.
