St. Clare of Assisi established a rule for the Poor Clares that reflected the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. Her religious order’s rule emphasized “perfect poverty” and forbade the ownership of property, even by the community. Her rule was approved by Pope Innocent IV on August 9, 1253, two days before she died.
