After World War I and the end of Ottoman rule, Palestine was mandated to Great Britain. The British had issued the Balfour Declaration in 1917, supporting a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine, after promising Arabs independence for their help in the war. In 1948 the British ended its mandate and withdrew from Palestine, leaving the Jews and Palestinians at odds over the land.
