Bill Monroe, a Kentucky native, originated the bluegrass style. He experimented with new methods of string-band music presentation and evolved a distinctive mandolin style while playing with his brothers Birch (on fiddle) and Charlie (on guitar). Later he formed the influential group the Blue Grass Boys, which would include as members other figures who became important in the genre, such as banjoist Earl Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt.
