The Russian linguist Yury Valentinovich Knorozov demonstrated that Maya hieroglyphic writing was phonetic as well as hieroglyphic with his work in the 1950s. In 1958 Heinrich Berlin showed that certain glyphs referred to places or ruling families. Tatiana Prouskouriakoff established that Maya inscriptions were primarily historical, focusing on the lives on Maya rulers and their families.
