In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby (1925) Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan were in love in Kentucky before he went to fight in World War I. After he left, Daisy married wealthy Chicagoan Tom Buchanan and moved to an affluent village in New York. Gatsby’s longing for Daisy leads him to buy a house near her, rekindle their affair, and flaunt his wealth (obtained through bootlegging).
