Aliyah in Judaism means an ascent to a sacred place and refers to the honor of a congregant being called up to the bimah (a central platform) in a synagogue to recite blessings and, if capable, read from the Torah. Since the late 19th century aliyah has also referred to Jewish immigration to Israel and is an important concept in Zionism.
